Scholarships for diabetics

Your high school diploma and GED allow you to go on with your academic education. Check out the following scholarship options when you are a diabetic.

Diabetes is a difficult and challenging disease to manage throughout your life. Many health complications may arise and the need for insulin is a lifelong chore. If you are one of the many millions of people who suffer from diabetes, there is a small benefit that comes from your medical condition. In particular, there are diabetes scholarships available to people that have type 1 and/or type 2 diabetes. Although the scholarships for college are not guaranteed and there is a limited number of scholarships available, it is a good idea to make an effort and apply if you happen to have the disease. After all, scholarship money does not need to be repaid after graduation. To help with your college scholarship search, we have a list of diabetes-related scholarships that can really assist in funding your higher education.

Diabetes Scholars Foundation Scholarship

The Diabetes Scholars Foundation offers a scholarship program for incoming college freshmen that are pursuing higher education at an accredited four-year college, university, technical or trade school.  These scholarships are for good students who have active involvement in the diabetes community, has an excellent academic record, is involved with the community and/or extracurricular activities, and lastly has shown that they are successfully dealing with diabetes in their day to day life.  These scholarships are merit-based and not based on financial need.  Scholarship amount ranges from $1,000 to $5,000.  The selection process includes an initial application screening, grading, and finally, a winner is chosen.  The great thing about this organization is that with one application, applicants will be considered for all of the scholarships available.

Novo Nordisk Donnelly Awards

Billy Jean King with WTT Charities started this scholarship in 1988. It was named after two World Team Tennis members and tennis champions, Diane Donnelly Stone and Tracey Donnelly Maltby. They are sisters who both suffer from diabetes since they were children.  The WTT Donnelly Awards is a sponsored by Novo Nordisk, a top pharmaceutical corporation specializing in diabetic care. Each year, scholarships are awarded to children that play tennis and suffer from diabetes. Award amounts are for 6 scholarships for $2,500 and 2 for $5,000. Past scholarship winners have not only demonstrated a strong academic record, but they have also been strong performers in high school tennis.

Thomas J. Seefred Trust Scholarship

This diabetes scholarship was started in 2005 and made possible by the trust of Thomas J. Seefred. The diabetic scholarship award is for Ohio residents that are also college-bound students that are between the ages of 18 and 25 who live with juvenile diabetes and is also pursuing a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university. The award is for up to $3,000 to be used for college expenses that can include tuition, room, and board. The application process includes proof of enrollment with GPA, doctor’s note stating a diagnosis of diabetes, one letter of recommendation, income tax records for students and parents, and a personal essay 500 words or less.

The Seneca Diabetes Foundation Scholarship

The Seneca Diabetes Foundation has set up a scholarship trust program to encourage the young students of Seneca. The scholarship amounts are for $5,000 in one year and $10,000 over two years. These scholarships will be given to Seneca students that go for a degree in the health and human services fields at an accredited college or university. Each scholarship focuses on a specific topic. However, students are allowed to apply for all scholarships. The application process is geared toward a student’s specific skill set or experience that would suit a specific scholarship.

  • Ruth Goode Nursing Scholarship
  • Geraldine Memmo Scholarship
