The Dalcroze Music Education Approach

The Dalcroze Music Education approach is teaching the fundamental concepts of music, its meaning in an expressive way, and the deeper connections music has with other human activities and other forms of art. The Dalcroze approach is pathbreaking and incorporates aural training, rhythmic movement, and vocal, instrumental, and physical training and improvisation.

A Dalcroze class divides into 3 components: Eurhythmics, for which Dalcroze is best known, which is teaching the concepts of musical expression, rhythm, and structure using movement; Solfege, a reinvention of traditional ear training and sight singing, which is developing an integrated and expressive understandings of sale, tonality, and pitch through activities that emphasize vocal improvisation and aural comprehension; and Improvisation, enhancing expressions and a deeper understanding of various musical forms, meaning, and concepts by creating music spontaneously while using instruments, voice, and movements.

How to Sing and Play Guitar

It can take some time and practice if you want to learn how to sing and play guitar together. This is mostly because you are dealing with playing one song but at two different rhythms.

This can be a challenging task, particularly if the guitar part involves a riff or syncopated line to play under the singing.  Some common issues that musicians find include:

* Singing at a pitch while splitting your concentration
* Making a song syllable match to a certain guitar note
* Keeping up a strumming rhythm while singing
* Coordinating the two tasks
* Maintaining song rhythms and timing throughout the whole song

While it might seem too tricky to deal with two different rhythms at once, many artists and musicians have mastered this skill and learned how to sing and play guitar together.  I have put some brief guidelines together to help you get started…..

Start Easy

Don’t fall into the common trap of starting out doing too much at once. Often people choose songs that are either too hard to sing, too hard to play, or both.  This usually means that one of your performances will suffer.  You may sing the song ok, but the guitar pattern is repetitive and lacks variation. Alternatively, you spend a lot of time focusing on playing and can’t concentrate on the pitch and tone of your voice.

For this reason, it’s best to start with choosing a song that is fairly easy on both tasks. Pick a tune that sits within your comfortable singing range and does not have a complex rhythm. It also helps if you really like the tune. This way you will have a good chance of succeeding and you will be motivated to continue practicing.

To help with the process, try humming the song while you get familiar with the guitar parts. You need to get the guitar playing so familiar that you really don’t have to think about the chords or your finger placement. Once you can do this it will free you up to concentrate on your lyrics and your singing voice.

Timing

Possibly the most difficult issue facing beginners is their timing. Timing is crucial in any musical performance! What this means is that particular words and/or syllables must occur in time with particular guitar parts or notes. If your time is out then the whole performance gets out of sync.  One great music teacher of mine told me that timing is the “Holy Cow” of music and he was right!

To master this, keep it easy and simple. Begin by breaking the song down into parts like verse and chorus. Play the guitar verse part only until you are familiar with it, then add your vocal. Practice this section to a good level before you go to the next.  Again, by choosing a more simple song you will be less likely to encounter big problems early on. Once you feel comfortable, you can start to tackle more complex playing or rhythms.

Using Your Imagination

One of humanities greatest gifts is the ability to imagine or envision things before we do them!  An important skill to learn as a singer is to imagine pitch. To do this, you use your imagination to envision yourself singing and producing the right note at a performance. When you learn how to sing and play guitar you can also apply the same strategy.

Try singing the song in your head while you play the guitar or the other way round. Imagine your hands holding the chords down while you sing. Another great help is to practice singing along with a recording of the song before you try to play it. This will help to develop your timing and allow you to more easily match the singing and playing rhythms together.

If there is any one rule for how to sing and play guitar it would probably just be to have some patience and do a whole lot of practice.  Your ability to split your concentration and match different rhythms will develop with time.

Teaching Music – The Early Stages

Obviously, the basic “Principles of Teaching” is based on the intermediate to advanced student of the piano. Since we all begin at the same place, it is crucial to understand, from the outset, what is expected. So here we’ll talk some more about Teaching Music – the early stages.

Daily practice and consistent lessons are the foundation for study. Daily practice because the basic skills must be acquired through regular use and consistent lessons since the commitment to the weekly time allotted in the teacher’s schedule must be respected. As we all know from experience, if we give ourselves an out–we will take it.

Daily practice should consist of carefully following the teacher’s instructions. Two or four measure sections repeated four to six times would be a minimum. Trouble spots often require eight or more repetitions. Remember, a sloppy repetition yields a sloppy performance.

Learning To Play Lead and Rhythm Guitar

Learning to play the guitar will require a great deal of dedication if you want to do it properly. After all, what’s the use of learning to play the guitar if you quit after a few weeks?

Realistically, it will take at least a couple of months to play the guitar comfortably. To make the process go faster, it would be best if you could pinpoint the reason why you want to begin learning to play the guitar. This way, you can target specific goals. For instance, would you be interested in playing for a band? If so, then you should take lead guitar lessons.

In a band, there is the lead guitarist and the rhythm guitarist. They both use the same type of guitar – there is no difference. The difference lies in how the guitar is played. The rhythm guitarist is the support to the vocals and provides the structure for the song. His role in the band is very important because a weak rhythm would not be able to draw out the crowd and make the band seem like a backyard kiddie band.

The rhythm guitarist is also most often the person who composes the song or helps compose the band’s music. If the lead singer is also a guitarist, most often he is the rhythm guitarist as well.

The lead guitarist is your rock star. He’s the guy with the solo and has the freedom to do a lot of improvisations during a song. While he may be the “star”, he can never work as a solo because he needs the rhythm guitarist to give him the good foundation for a song.

If you can select between the rhythm and lead guitar, then you can decide if you want lead guitar lessons or not. The difference in the lessons for a lead guitarist would be the free-flowing style a guitar tutor would encourage. The opposite is true for the rhythm guitarist. He must stick to the rhythm because the band depends on him.

One idea that you might be interested in is to learn how to be a lead and rhythm guitarist. With this kind of skills, you can be both star and singer, and this is the stuff dreams are made of – when you become recognized for your talent and ability to carry a song, re-invent it, and bring it home.

Learning to play the guitar as a lead guitarist is an awesome experience, but only after you have mastered the basics. Just like anything else in this world, it starts with basics. Spend a lot of time learning these because it will dictate the kind of guitarist you will be.

If having lead guitar lessons is your objective, then make sure that you get a good lead guitarist as a mentor. If you are a minor, make sure your parents support your dream or at least one adult member in your family.

Electric/Acoustic Guitar For Beginners

Like the classic guitar, the acoustic guitar is played without any electric amplification. When getting your first guitar, you must choose between steel or nylon strings. Naturally, you will need to get a guitar that was made specifically for nylon (classic guitar) or acoustic (acoustic guitar) strings. The difference between the two strings would be the sound that you make, as well as the effect on your fingers.

Acoustic guitar lessons for beginners must start with selecting your strings. Steel strings, being a tougher string, can make deep marks on your fingers, and if you are not used to this, it could hamper your lessons.  Nylon strings use less tension and so are not as tough to play with.

The reason you should never use nylon strings on a steel acoustic guitar is because the nut that holds down the strings at the end of the guitar is narrower and will not be able to hold the wider nylon strings. Furthermore, the angle of the guitar saddle is different for steel acoustic guitars.

Overall, this means that if you want to have a guitar that plays in perfect tune, you must never switch strings.

An important factor in acoustic guitar lessons for beginners is caring for the guitar. After playing on your guitar or after each session, make sure to gently wipe the guitar strings to remove the dirt and oil. If left without proper care, your guitar strings will not last as long and could produce flat sounds in the process.

It is possible to buy an acoustic guitar designed for nylon strings but you will not be able to get the sharp acoustic sound common to steel acoustic guitars. However, for comfort and for beginners, nylon strings might be the better alternative, especially for young teens.

Beginning guitar lessons must be conducted with care. Choosing your tutor or guitar teacher is very important especially for young children and teenagers. This is because an impatient and rough tutor would not be able to sustain the interest of the student long enough for him to learn even just the basics.

Assuming you have found a good teacher, beginning guitar lessons should start with familiarity with the instrument, the music sheets and how to read the notes, and then the basic chords. It is also important to focus on strengthening the fingers as well as stretching them to reach the right notes.

For acoustic guitar lessons for beginners, the tutor must be able to emphasize the different strokes and the sounds they create. The tendency for many young learners is to strum the strings hard. However, acoustic sound is gentle and tender, not just strong and loud.

As with learning anything new, beginning guitar lessons can get tedious because of the scales and repetition. If you are the tutor, why not spike up the lessons with a short tune they can learn after each lesson. As for the student, acoustic guitar lessons for beginners is very tempting to rush through. Except without the strong foundation of being able to blend chords and strum or pluck the strings, you will never be able to strike out on your own. You could try experimenting every time you learn a new chord and create short tunes. This will provide you with some creative leeway, and keep you interested in learning how to play the instrument.

All things done properly, like acoustic guitar lessons for beginners, will pay off handsomely in the end. Practice and see.

Guitar Lessons For Beginners

The guitar is one of the most popular instruments. It surpasses many others like the piano and drums because it is handy and easy to carry around. Also, a guitar is part of the ever popular band, and being part of a band will always be a dream for many young musicians. It epitomizes success and popularity.

The purpose of this site and my guitar lessons are to start you off playing guitar the correct way and to recommend the best teaching methods to you so you can achieve your dream of playing the guitar. It is easy to teach yourself guitar and in my opinion teaching yourself is the best way, but you must always have a lesson plan of some sort so you are always learning.

This is an overview of some of the important things you should start learning as a beginner guitarist.

One:

You need to be able to identify the parts of a guitar. The main parts are the neck and the body. The other parts are the head where the tuning parts are located; the fingerboard; the frets or the thin metal strips on the fingerboard;  the nuts and tuning keys which are used to get the right note; strings, the bridge or endpoint of your guitar strings; the tailpiece and pickups. These are just the visible parts. In fact, a guitar can have as many as 200 parts working together to give the perfect sound.

Two:

You must also know what a chromatic scale is. This is the most fundamental Western musical scale, and you will need to know how to use the chromatic scale. This scale has 12 chromatic notes. To learn how to play the guitar, you should start by trying out 4-note combinations, using different frets. The reason you want to keep practicing the chromatic scale is that it will not only familiarize your fingers with the different positions, but it will also give them valuable strengthening exercises.

Three:

If you want to teach yourself to play guitar, you should begin by learning how to tune a guitar. This means developing your ear to recognize the right pitch or being able to compare pitches. There are great online tuning sites that will help you perfectly well to tune your guitar in the right way. The strings are assigned letters are E, A, D, G, B, and e, in standard tuning. The strings are organized according to thickness here, with E being the thickest string, e being the thinnest.

Four:

Guitar lessons for beginners should also include mastering some easy guitar chords such as the C major, G major, and the D major chords. If you have been able to master these first three chords, then try out other chords like the E minor chord and the D minor chord. You should also start becoming familiar with strumming and plucking the guitar strings.

Five:

Start learning many kinds of scales. At this point, teaching yourself to play guitar means better finger coordination, and the best way to achieve this is by doing scales. It may be boring, but there is a purpose to these exercises that make absolute sense once you have mastered the scales. To generate some excitement in your practice sessions, try playing the scales backward. Take your time and never rush through the scales. The purpose here is to make sure every note is heard clearly.

Six:

If you want to learn how to play the guitar, you should also start to call the guitar strings by their standard names. Each guitar string is assigned a letter (depending on what it is tuned to), just as every guitar note is also given a letter. This is important because when you are reading guitar sheets, you will see letters instead of notes. In some guitar books, it simply puts the letters on top of the words, with no other guide.

Based on this guitar lesson, you can begin to play simple songs, and even get to compose your own tunes. Eventually, you will start to pick up on the more complex guitar playing styles. If you can learn how to play the guitar, then you can learn how to compose your own music.

Guitar warm-up in the first place

There are simple things in this world that need to be taken into account before every action. We all know these simple things, but we often forget about them. Or even we don’t take them seriously.

Here I’m talking about simple guitar warm up before every practice. Many guitar players (most of all beginners) may think that this is just a waste of precious practice time: “A warm up? Huh, don’t be silly!”

“Why I need to waste my time if I can start playing my favorite songs and other stuff right away? My time is limited, there’s something much important to do!”  This could be one aspect why musicians treat warming up as something silly.

Another aspect is that guitar players don’t really know how to do it, why it’s very important. It has such a value as playing scales. So, starting with simple, today I would like to tell you about the importance of the warming and preparing hands. I’ll tell you why it needs to be taken very seriously. It’s essential and it’s one of the fundamentals when you want to play guitar for years to come.

The importance of guitar warm-up

First, I want to tell you about my personal experience, about my personal injury that happened recently while practicing the guitar. I think it happened because I ignored few simple things. My injury took me about a month to cure it and only after that period I could start doing my practice again.

I traumatized my left hand. My Carpal tunnel was inflamed. This was a very bad feeling because my left hand was out of the work. I couldn’t play the guitar, I couldn’t practice my favorite licks, songs, and backing tracks. I couldn’t do anything with my left hand. It was swollen. My practice was stopped for about a month. That happened because I ignored just simple things before every practice. That was simply a proper warming-up procedure.

I’m not telling you like in music school right now what to do and what to do not. All I want to tell you is that why this is such an essential and important thing that needs to be done before every practice. It’s up to you to make a decision. Here I’m letting you know how it can be done in a simple way.

So, a good warm-up is preparing yourself for a real workout. You can do simple warm-up exercise before playing or simple hand stretching. Check also out  Youtube. There you’ll find good examples.

It can be also fretboard exercises such as scale practice or arpeggio playing. No matter what you do, do it slowly. Let your hands do a warm-up exercise before every time you will play your guitar. After your exercise, your hands become warm and your blood starts to circle around your hands to prepare them.

But why it’s so important before guitar practice?

Well, take a look at (for example) Martial Arts. Martial Arts masters dedicate about 30 – 60 minutes to warming every time before they start their training. They prepare the body to not injure it. The human body is such a great mechanism that it can stand massive loads. But it can’t stand that forever. One day it will fail and then it can turn into an injury.

From personal experience, I definitely can say that it will always happen at an unexpected moment. And when it happens, your practice is gone. By preparing well, you’ll reduce the chances of injuring your hands to a minimum. When your hands and body are prepared for a big load, your body can progress faster because every muscle needs optimal temperature for speed, vibrato licks, fast licks, and complicated guitar playing.

Guitar warm-up is such a simple yet very important practice that needs to be done every time before practice, because:
– It takes about 5 – 10 minutes of your time
– It’s simple stretch
– It reduces chances of any injury

Ok, this was the simple stretch thing that is very interesting (because you can hear all your bones crack). In some time we’ll talk about some practice exercises before doing real “workout”.

How to avoid guitar injury

Practicing the guitar there’s like-hood getting a hand injury. It’s possible like in football, basketball, athletics and so on. It’s no instant possibility getting an injury right away, but it can happen unexpectedly. Getting your hand harmed is the biggest guitarists problem.

Hands are musician’s essential instrument and harming them cause’s inconvenience. But the biggest harm that guitar injury leaves is the negative trail to the hands. Even after it is healed, it can happen again in the same place, because your muscles never stay the same like before. This impact can slow down handwork and even the whole progress.

That’s why I would like to tell you how to avoid guitar injury and keep in mind to take care of your hands and body. This post is written from personal experience and it will be one small piece of knowledge in your to guide you that it’s possible.

Let me tell you about my personal story. Here’s how it happened…

A while ago I practiced guitar playing with no understanding how to do it the right way. I knew that to play better, you must practice hard and every day.

“Today I’m practicing a lot also, but I’m doing that in a slightly different way. I’ll tell you more about it later…”

Ok, I played and played a lot. One day I felt that my left hand started to harm. The pain was like a tingling. Tingling was stronger while vibrato and fast scale playing. My hand hurt, but I overlooked it and continued playing. A few days later my speed slowed down and I couldn’t even play a simple chord. I realized that this is very bad and I stopped the practice. But my hand was already injured. It swelled and it was the same size as feet roe. It started to pain a lot and soon I couldn’t pick up anything with my left hand. Next what happened… was my 4-week treatment.

Hand’s Carpal tunnel was inflamed. I spent a lot of time treating my and going to medical care. I don’t speak about the money that was spent on treatment. I spent some money…

“That money could be spent on something much better like entertainment or vacation. But it was not meant for that. It was meant for medical treatment. Shame…” I’m not reading you any morality, I’m telling you my personal story.

Today I feel old injury in my left hand. It a little bit slows down my playing skills and the speed. But from another side, it allows working on harmonics and Jimi Hendrix/John Frusciante style of playing technique instead. Maybe it not so bad at all. Ok, never mind, let’s continue.

Here I’ve highlighted few tips for advanced players and beginners about how to avoid guitar injury. Before you read these suggestions, I highly recommend reading the post about guitar warm-up that’s the basic way to avoid any injury.

Guitar injuries. Recommendations for beginners

As any beginner, you need to work out your hands. Keep practice. Your hands will ache for some time. Best of all is to work out with chord playing on the first 5 frets, fast scale playing, solos, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and arpeggios. Chord playing strengthens wrists. Arpeggios help very well in finger/hand synchronization.

You might feel that your hands are about to fall down, because of the pain. Forget about it! Keep practice! In one beautiful day, your hands will become strong and you’ll feel no pain. Any chord playing will be painless. Keep in mind to do a guitar warm up before practice. Do it always (it’s recommended)! Few reasons why to do it:

– It prepares hands
– It brings blood to muscles
– It warms up body
– It reduces getting guitar injuries up to 90%!
– For a beginner, it takes about a year or two. Yes, that’s large period. But it flies fast when you practice. It leaves pleasure for carried work out.

Recommendations for advanced players

As it was said earlier, warm up is always in the first place. Do it always. Next, you need to stop playing for a week or two; it depends on your feelings. I make a guitar vacation in every 3 or 4 months. I put my guitar away and stop practice for two weeks. It helps me to rest hands, body and my mind. Everyone at the job usually goes on vacation after 6 months. It helps in resting and raising productivity. The same happens with guitar playing.

Secondly, if you feel some kind of tingling in your hands then stop playing. If you feel strong warmth in hands at the close end of practice, then also stop playing. This warm feeling can cause guitar related injury.

Massage your hands and body. No matter how often. Do some simple massages. I do it once a week or two. It helps to:

– Restore blood movement
– Calm tension in hands
– And reduces micro-injuries!

Well, that’s it. It’s a simple thing, but often we just forget about it and remember when something bad happens.

The Principles of Music Teaching

The pursuit of personal excellence, whether as a five-year-old or as a sixty-five-year-old, is a driving force of life–the cradle of hope and faith. Whether this pursuit is in the planting of a garden, the raising of a child, the painting of a picture, becoming an “A” student or excelling at sports, bodybuilding or music, the basic principles remain the same. Regardless of your path, I believe you will find correlations in the basic principles of my teaching of the piano.

1.      Most people READ THROUGH the music repeatedly until they get most of the notes right, gradually deciding on proper fingering, dynamics, phrasing (legato, detached notes, and timing of breath pauses) and pedaling. This approach is a WASTE OF TIME and produces a dissatisfying result.

2.      Listen to a RECOMMENDED recording three or four times–following the music–to get a general idea of the piece. Then DO NOT listen to the recording again until the piece is learned and polished.
