The Ultimate Bug Out Food – Honey

When looking for the best food to stock up on, few things will beat honey. From its medicinal uses to calorie content to shelf life, honey is the ultimate bug out/survival food. It is food, it is a sweet treat, it is a natural energy booster, it is full of antioxidants and has antibacterial properties, and it has an unlimited shelf life. It has been used for thousands of years to treat cuts and burns. It is good for hangovers, sore throats, athletes foot, rashes, and insomnia. It is a miracle in nature often taken for granted.

In a survival situation, the name of the game is calories, and honey is loaded with them. One tablespoon of honey has around 64 calories where a tablespoon of sugar only has 46 calories. If you are living on raw gathered vegetables and unseasoned wild game, honey will be a blessing. One of my favorite things growing up was to dip chicken in honey. It makes every meat a sweet treat.

Honey does not go bad. Reportedly, a group of archaeologists had found several 2000-year-old honey jars in an Egyptian tomb that was still as good as the day it was taken from the hives. Honey will crystallize. This is a natural process and does not make it unsafe. If this happens, put the jar in warm water and stir occasionally and the crystals will disappear. I do want to note that you should only get pure honey. Some of the store brands are not actual honey.

Preppers are always trying to find foods that store indefinitely. Most things have a shelf life even when canned. Since we will not know the date of the downfall of our civilization, if it happens, we must stock up now. If we have food that has a shelf life of 5 years, then every 5 years we must eat/toss out the old food and replace it. If you stock up on honey now, there could be a doomsday when your great, great grandchildren are adults and their bellies will be fat with honey. It is the best food for burying in caches at your bug out location since it does not need to be maintained. I’d like to think that one day when the human race is extinct, that some other species will find one of my caches of honey and they will marvel at its properties and that it is still good.

Honey should be in your first aid kit. If you are cut or burned, honey provides a moist, healing environment for the wound while also killing off the bacteria around the wound to prevent an infection. If you get a cut, simply spread honey on it. It is good to clean and reapply the honey 3 times a day until it is healed over. The only concern is a wound that is producing a lot of fluid. The fluid will dilute the honey so be generous with the amount of honey you are using. Conserving it for food will not mean anything if your wound becomes infected and kills you.

So place a jar of raw honey in your bug out bag. Its many purposes and high-calorie content makes it the ultimate survival food. Never leave home without it. Especially if you are bugging out.
